Europe stretch Ryder Cup lead

23/09/2006

Ian Woosnam's European team maintained their dominance of this year's Ryder Cup through the foursomes to take a commanding 10-6 lead into the final day singles matches.

Paul Casey's hole-in-one sealed the most convincing of the afternoon's victories as he and partner David Howell made short work of their match with Stewart Cink and Zach Johnson, winning five and four.

Elsewhere Sergio Garcia's rampant Ryder Cup form continued as he revived his successful partnership with Englishman Luke Donald.

The pair overcame Kenny Perry and Stewart Cink at Oaklands Hills two years ago and returned to the K Club clubhouse two and one winners over Phil Mickelson and David Toms in the first match of the afternoon.

Colin Montgomerie and Lee Westwood took a half from a hard-fought match with Chad Campbell and Vaughn Taylor which went all the way to the final green.

Montgomerie has got through a lot of work for the Europeans already this weekend having played in three matches all of which have gone down to the 18th.

In the one American highlight of the session Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk overcame Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley three and two.

Woods shook over his sluggish form to play a full part in a win which was crucial to keeping Tom Lehman's team in the contest.
