Fasth leads Mallorca Classic

26/10/2007

Sweden's Niclas Fasth leads the Mallorca Classic after carding a five-under-par 65 in the rain-affected first round.

Play was suspended on Thursday after storms in the area made conditions dangerous to the golfers still on the course, so many players had to complete their first round on Friday morning.

Fasth's impressive bogey-free round featured three consecutive birdies on the front nine at the par-four fourth and fifth and the par-five sixth.

And two more birdies at the tenth and 15th holes gave the Swede the clubhouse lead.

As many as six players are tied for second place, including England's Sam Little and Irish pair Peter Lawrie and Gary Murphy.

Dutchman Robert-Jan Dereksen, France's Jean-Francois Lucquin and South African Andrew McLardy make up the rest of the group.

Several other Englishmen remain in contention, including Mark Foster, James Hepworth and the 16th-placed man on the European Order of Merit Graeme Storm on three under par.

Richard Finch is on two-under alongside countryman Barry Lane, Scotland's Alastair Forsyth and Spaniard and Open Championship runner-up Sergio Garcia.

Paul Lawrie carded a solid one-under-par, although it was a difficult day for some of the big-name players on the Balearic island.

Jean van der Velde had a one-over-par round of 71 while Miguel Angel Jimenez was three over for the day.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18332247-ADNFCR
