Fisher and Forsyth guarantee US Open places

02/06/2008

England's Ross Fisher and Alistair Forsyth from Scotland will take part in next week's US Open after finishing top of the European qualifying event.

Despite Darren Clarke opting to sit out this year's Open in order to focus on the forthcoming European Tour, the competition at the Walton Heath course in Surrey was still fierce, with 42 players vying for just seven places.

Forsyth got off to a dream start and kept his momentum going throughout the one-day event, equalling Fisher's rounds of 69 and 68, with the pair finishing joint first on seven under par.

Given his victory at the Madeira Islands Open earlier this season, the Scot is confident that he won't be just making up the numbers at Torrey Pines.

"My one previous American major was the 2003 PGA at Oak Hill and I found that really, really hard," he said.

"But I like to think I am far better player now."

Also making the cut were England's Robert Dinwiddles, Philip Archer and Ross McGowan, while Swede Johan Edfors and Frenchman Thomas Levet will also represent European golf at the Open.

However, following the example of Clarke, more than 20 of the continent's top pros withdrew from the qualifiers with an eye on The Open at Royal Birkdale in July.
