Fisher and Lawrie in touch as Larrazabal leads
27/06/2008
Spain's Pablo Larrazabal holds a one-shot lead of the French Open after shooting a superb first round of 65 in Paris.
Larrazabal carded three birdies in his first four holes after starting at the tenth tee, and looked on course for a career-best round until he bogeyed his final hole of the day - the par-five ninth.
However, his seven birdies overall still gave him an advantage at the top of the leaderboard, with England's Oliver Fisher still in touch one shot back after enjoying a solid, bogey-free round of 66.
Fisher is joined in second place by Ireland's Peter Lawrie, whose rather more topsy-turvy outing - featuring ten birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey - also gave him 66 after the first day's play.
Argentina's Angel Cabrera sits fourth after a four-under-par round of 67, while a 12-strong group of players are tied for fifth - including Englishmen Barry Lane, Graeme Storm and Miles Tunnicliff; Wales' Jamie Donaldson; and Scot Andrew Coltart.
Ryder Cup hopefuls Lee Westwood and Colin Montgomerie are also still within touching distance of the leaders on two under par, along with Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell.
