Frenchman Bourdy triumphs in sudden-death playoff

06/04/2008

France's Gregory Bourdy pipped David Howell and Alastair Forsyth in a playoff to win the Portuguese Open.

Bourdy sealed victory on the third extra hole after the trio had finished on 18-under par.

The 25-year-old began the day four shots ahead of Howell and six in front of Forsyth, but saw his lead sliced after three birdies in his opening five holes.

Bourdy recovered with four birdies on the back nine and pars on the final two holes to card a 70.

Englishman Howell went round in 64 including a stunning birdie on the 17th and a stroke of luck on the 18th when his ball hit a metal stake allowing him to make par.

Scot Forsyth sneaked into a playoff after birdying the last two holes to card 66, including sinking a 25-foot putt on the 18th.

Three pars from Bourdy on the extra holes were enough to seal his second Tour victory.

The Bordeaux-based golfer admitted he struggled on the first nine holes.

"I was plus three and I lost a little bit of my game. But I made a few birdies and I felt if I made three or four I would have a big chance," Bourdy said.

"I was focused on my game and am so happy to win."

Howell, who has been hampered by injuries for the last 15 months, said he was disappointed with his shot on the third extra hole.

"My shot into the green at the third extra hole was a four-iron, a shot I've struggled with throughout my career and it cost me today," Howell said.

"But I can't be too disappointed. It was a big week for me and I have to be happy with that."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18538918-ADNFCR
