Furyk eyes improvement

04/12/2006

Despite retaining his Nedbank Golf Challenge title in Sun City over the weekend, world number two Jim Furyk says he is still looking to improve his game.

The American has had a stellar year on the PGA Tour and capped his recent good form with a two-shot victory over Sweden's Henrik Stenson at the Gary Player Country Club in South Africa.

Furyk still sits behind Tiger Woods in the world rankings however and he seems resigned to the fact that second place is all he can hope for when his American counterpart is at the peak of his powers.

"Tiger is a very gifted and driven player and he'll be very difficult to catch on the rankings," the 36-year-old Furyk said.

"It will take me a long time at my current level – which is my best and he is still better – to catch him.

Furyk said that the main obstacle standing between him and Woods was distance off the tee. He admitted to being "an average length player" but hoped that recent victories would push him towards improving this part of his game.

"What's important to me is improving my game and getting better, whatever the ranking says," he added.

Despite a two-over-par final round in Sun City, Furyk was able to hang on to win the Nedbank tournament. Woods did not take part in the South African event after he beat Furyk to the Grand Slam of Golf title in Hawaii two weeks ago to retain his number one status.

Furyk won the Canadian Open and the Wachovia Championship on his way to earning over $7 million on the Tour in 2006.
