Furyk holes ace in Canadian win

30/07/2007

World number three Jim Furyk knocked in a hole-in-one on his way to victory at the Canadian Open in Ontario.

The American, who won the same event last season, successfully defended his title with a blistering seven-under-par final round of 64 to overhaul overnight leader Vijay Singh by one shot, finishing on 16 under par.

Fijian Singh had been in control for the majority of the tournament, with first and third rounds of three-under-par and a second round of 65, to finish on 15 under par overall.

Fellow American John Mallinger and Australia's Steve Allan, who shared second place ahead of the final round, slipped down the leaderboard to joint-seventh when they could finish only even-par for the day.

Ryan Palmer finished tied for third with George McNeill, with Bob Heintz and Hunter Mahan, who was the leader after the first round after carding an incredible nine-under round of 62, ending the tournament in joint-fifth.

Furyk, who picked up his 13th PGA Tour trophy and his first since September last year, said he enjoyed playing in Canada as it had brought him much success throughout his career.

"I really appreciate all the support I've had," Furyk said.

"It's been great coming to Canada the last two years. And I'll see you again next year."

Furyk moves up to third in the FedEx Cup rankings, which is made up of performances from just this season, behind Singh in second and world number one Tiger Woods.
