Garcia: I have to believe in myself
20/07/2007
Sergio Garcia believes his mental strength will determine whether he will triumph at the 136th Open at Carnoustie.
The Spaniard is the leader for the second straight day after carding 71 to put himself two shots clear of South Korean KJ Choi.
Garcia made just two birdies but produced a string of stunning shots to save par including on the final hole.
The 27-year-old said he will remain positive in the bid to end his agonising wait for a Major.
"It wasn't an easy day out there," Garcia said.
I was hoping for a little better than I did but every time you can shoot even par on a tough day in an Open championship you know you're going to be very close.
"Those last few holes are playing really difficult. I managed to not make many mistakes. I didn't play as well as yesterday, but I was quite consistent.
"I am in a good position but I just have to keep playing well and believe in myself."
Elsewhere, Tiger Woods is seven strokes off the lead after going round in 74 to add to his opening round of 69.
The world number one drove his opening tee shot into the water that lead to a two-stroke penalty and a double bogey six.
After a birdie on the second, the American made bogeys on the fifth and eighth to lie on 39 after the front nine.
The 12-time Major winner birdied the 14th but bogeyed the final hole to leave him with a mountain to climb to catch Garcia.
Woods admitted it was a nightmare second round at Carnoustie. "I hit a lot of poor shots but hung in there," he said.
"I could easily have shot myself out of the tournament but I kept myself right in there.
"With the bad weather coming I need to get organised because tomorrow will probably be a pretty tough day."
