Garcia wins playoff to take Players Championship
12/05/2008
Sergio Garcia has become only the second ever European winner of the Players Championship after beating Paul Goydos at the first hole of a playoff.
The Spaniard joins the honours list alongside Scotland's Sandy Lyle, who took the title in 1987, after seeing off the challenge of the overnight leader on a difficult final day at a windswept Sawgrass course.
Only eight of the remaining 74 players broke par in their final rounds, as Garcia's one-under-par 71 pulled him into a tie with Goydos, who finished two over par for the day.
Chad Campbell had the most impressive outing, with a four-under-par 68 to finish in a tie for tenth.
The second-placed man overnight, Kenny Perry, endured a disastrous fourth day however, as he registered seven bogeys and a triple-bogey seven at the par-four 15th for a nine-over-par round.
Phil Mickelson also tumbled out of contention as he carded a six-over-par final round to finish joint 21st.
But all eyes were on Goydos and Garcia in the playoff after both men finished on five under par for the tournament.
And the European sunk his third shot at the island green 17th, after Goydos had missed a 15ft putt for par, securing his first PGA Tour title for three years.
