Germany win golf World Cup
11/12/2006
The German pair of Bernhard Langer and Marcel Siem have claimed the World Golf Championship crown in Barbados.
Veteran Langer and his 23-year-old partner secured the title following a play-off against Scottish pair Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren after both teams had finished on 16 under par.
It took just one additional hole before the competition was decided, however, when Montgomerie missed from five feet to card a bogey on the first and hand the title to the German pair, who holed a par putt before them.
The title was 49-year-old Langer's second World Cup crown after he secured the trophy in 1990 alongside Torsten Gideon and the veteran said he had surprised himself with his continuing good form.
"It is not easy to believe that 16 years later I am still in the winner's circle," he said. "It just shows that the golf ball doesn't know how old you are."
Swedish pair Henrik Stenson and Carl Petterson, who had led the field going into the final day, finished third and South Africa claimed fourth place. Defending champions Wales finished joint-eighth.
The final day's play was interrupted by rain when downpours meant the Sandy Lane course was unplayable, delaying the first tee-off by almost two hours.
