Green goes clear in Vienna
09/06/2007
Australia's Richard Green has moved three shots clear of the field after the third round of the BC-CA Open in Austria.
The 36-year-old from Melbourne started the day on 11-under, just a shot ahead of the closest contender, but made further progress with a solid round that took him onto 15-under going into the final eighteen.
England's Richard McEvoy fired a strong 64 to move up into second spot on 12-under with Steven Jeppesen and Miguel Angel Jimenez in pursuit a shot further back.
Ryder Cup veteran Lee Westwood had looked set to move up on Green's shoulder as well after arriving on the 15th tee just three shots of the pace.
But a spectacular nosedive in confidence saw him return to level par for the competition with quadruple bogey nines on the 15th and 18th.
Should he maintain his grip on his lead tomorrow, Green will end a ten-year wait for his second European Tour win after first tasting success in Dubai in 1997.
"I'll be fairly anxious to win because it's been a long time but I won't be desperate because I'm not going to put any undue pressure on myself," he said.
"It's hard to put a finger on why I've not won again but I do now have more self-belief."
