Green leads the way in Austria

08/06/2007

Richard Green leads the BA-CA Open Championship by one stoke after the second round at the Fontana Golf Club in Austria.

The Australian shot a round of 65 to follow his 66 yesterday and currently sits at 11 under par.

Sweden's Martin Erlandsson lies one shot back in second after shooting a three-under-par round of 68.

Fellow Swedes Pelle Edberg and Steven Jeppesen are tied with Spain's Miguel Angel Jiminez in third on nine-under.

Green set a new course record last year with a round of 63 after being convinced to play in Austria by Sweden's Robert Karlsson, who believed his style of play would suit the course.

"I decided to take Robert's advice last year and came to Fontana for the first time, played well and fell in love with the place. The course fits my game well, just as Robert predicted. I feel very comfortable… almost like playing at home!" he said.

However Green has not won on the European Tour since the Dubai Desert Classic in 1997 and is keen to change that.

"I've got to lift that monkey off my back. I won the Australian Masters in 2004, which was a great achievement, but I would really love to win on the European Tour again. It's been ten years since Dubai and I will certainly keep trying."

There was disappointment for Brits Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke, both of whom missed the cut, finishing on five and one over par respectively, a week before the US Open.
