Green wins Vienna playoff
10/06/2007
Australian golfer Richard Green won the Austrian Open the hard way after three-putting on the 18th green in Vienna.
The 36-year-old from Melbourne needed just two putts from 12 feet on the last to complete his victory but sent his first three feet past the last hole at the Fontana golf club.
On missing the second he was forced into a playoff with Frenchman Jean-Francois Remesy.
His rival found water and bogeyed the first playoff hole after shooting an impressive 64 to race up the leaderboard on the last day.
Ranked 27th on the European PGA Tour, Green held his nerve to recover from what had looked like a missed opportunity.
Rain and lightening, which forced delays during the afternoon, provided a suitable backdrop as the drama unfolded in Vienna.
But Green – who previously won a playoff in the 1997 Desert Dubai Classic against Greg Norman and Ian Woosnam – managed to see off Remesy to collect his €216,660 (£147,128) prize.
Michael Jonzon, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Englishman Chris Gane tied third place.
