Harrington doubtful for Open title defence
15/07/2008
Defending champion Padraig Harrington has admitted he is "not sure" if he will be fit to tee-off for his first round at the Open Championship this week because of a wrist injury.
The Irishman, who won a tense and emotional playoff against Sergio Garcia at the Open last year, is due to begin the defence of his crown on Thursday morning at 07:58 BST alongside Justin Leonard and Retief Goosen.
However, Harrington revealed he injured his wrist at the weekend and he remains concerned that it will continue to cause him problems, especially if he has to force shots out of any deep rough.
Asked if he would definitely play in the first round on Thursday, Harrington told Irish broadcaster RTE: "I'm just not sure. I don't know.
"It has improved over the last two days but I just can't be sure until I hit start hitting shots.
"I could not support the weight of the club with my wrist on Saturday and Sunday.
"I can do that now but I don't know about hitting into the turf or the rough and that's something I can't really test."
Nevertheless, he said he is "strongly hopeful" he will take part at Royal Birkdale - even if he is unable to take part in any practice rounds today and tomorrow.
"I've been having treatment and I'm strongly hopeful I will be able to play," the Dubliner continued.
"The only issue would be if I re-injured it in the rough and that's what is a little bit scary. I'm going for physio now and then out to see if I can hit shots.
"If it stays stable I will play a practice round but pick the ball up in the rough. If it's not stable I will have another day off."
