Hoffman leads in Las Vegas
15/10/2006
US golfer Charley Hoffman is the surprise leader of the Las Vegas Open at 17 under par following a third round of six under.
He leads the field by one shot after last night's bad light, which forced play to be abandoned early and the young American still has a further four holes to play.
Having started the day on 11-under he birdied three of the first five holes and another on the 14th green before the weather brought a halt to proceedings.
Last night the clubhouse leader was Daniel Chopra of Sweden, who had the joint best round of the day, carding an eight under round of 64. The Swede is still well placed and in form following a tie for sixth in Greensboro last week.
Hoffman will be looking to capitalise on his position as a win would present a major breakthrough for the player in only his second year on the tour.
Tournament favourite Jim Furyk is back in a tie for 45th and currently lays two under after his third round. With so few big names around him it may be Hoffman may well never get a better chance to break his duck.
Elsewhere, Annika Sorenstam leads the LPGA World Championship by three shots after shooting a round of 66. If Sorenstam is successful it will be the sixth time in a row that she will have won this tournament.
