Howell and Singh lead at halfway
10/06/2006
England's David Howell and Fiji's Vijay Singh have a one-shot lead at the halfway stage of the Barclays Classic in New York.
The pair are on eight-under overall, one ahead of Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson, after respective rounds of 68 and 64.
Howell's 68 included five birdies and he admitted that his form was pleasing him ahead of the US Open.
"The best preparation for the US Open is to have your game in shape and I'm doing that this week," Howell said.
However, it was Singh who roared into contention on the second day with a seven-under par 64.
The world number four carded five birdies and an eagle on the ninth on his way to his best score of the year.
Another player to move up the leaderboard was Luke Donald, who shot a six-under par 65 to move to five-under, alongside overnight leader Adam Scott of Australia who carded a 72.
Ireland's Padraig Harrington also had a good day, recovering from a three-over 74 on day one to record a five-under par 66.
Harrington made nine bridies overall during his round but a run of four bogeys in five holes undermined his good work and he was left on two-under overall.
Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell, who secured his place at Winged Foot earlier this week, made three birdies and an eagle at the last but two bogeys held him back to three-under for the day and four-under for the tournament.
