Immelman lands maiden tour title
10/07/2006
South African Trevor Immelman has finally ended his barren time on the USPGA Tour by landing the Western Open title in Illinois.
Immelman started his final round two shots off the pace but battled into the lead with six birdies on route to 13-under-par overall.
He had to fend off a challenge from Tiger Woods to scoop his first tour title, winning by two shots from the world number one.
Australia's Matthew Goggin shared second place with Woods on 11 under, two shots clear of a six-man group including Vijay Singh on nine under.
Speaking after holing out at the last to card a birdie and clinch his maiden PGA victory, Immelman admitted he could barely believe it.
"It was just such a fantastic feeling to hole that putt, uphill and downhill," he said.
"I really enjoyed every minute of it but to hole that putt on the last - it gives me goosebumps thinking about it. It hasn't quite sunk in yet."
Of the British contingent taking part this week, US-based Englishman Justin Rose led the pack by finishing tied for 19th on five under.
Brian Davis and Luke Donald both closed on four under, one place further back.
