Ireland's Murphy joins crowd of players on top in Vienna
06/06/2008
Ireland's Gary Murphy is one of six players tied for the lead after the delayed first round of the Austrian Open in Vienna.
The first day was washed out without a single shot being struck and the tournament now looks likely to be cut to 54 holes.
Murphy shot 64 to lie on seven-under par to share the lead with home favourite Martin Wiegele, India's Jeev Milkha Singh, and Sweden's Pelle Edgberg.
Australian Scott Barr and Swede Christian Nilsson also shot 64 to lie on seven-under, while Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke birdied the last for a one-under-par 70.
But Austrian Wiegele will be the most disappointed having been on nine-under at one stage.
"I didn't think about a 59, I was just taking it shot by shot and then the difficult seventh hole came up and I blocked my tee shot," Wiegele said.
"I did the same at the next and it nearly went in the water so I was happy to finish with a 64."
Ex-US Open winner Michael Campbell, 39, is tied for 41st in his latest quest to recover his form.
The New Zealander has not won a tournament since his triumph over Tiger Woods by two strokes at Pinehurst in 2005
Campbell, who went round in 69 to lie on two-under after sinking five birdies, said he is just trying to keep his game simple.
"I'm concentrating on my routine and keeping it nice and slow. Sometimes when you are struggling you're thinking about too many things and my cup was definitely overflowing so I want to simplify things," Campbell said.
"It's frustrating we might not play 72 holes because I wanted to get four good rounds under my belt before the US Open next week but it's a step in the right direction."
