Jimenez rolls back the years
18/11/2007
Veteran Miguel Angel Jimenez snatched victory in the Hong Kong Open after Robert Karlsson double-bogeyed the final hole.
The 43-year-old Spaniard carded a final round of 67 to finish on 15-under-par, one stroke ahead of Karlsson, KJ Choi and Thongchai Jaidee.
Going into the final day four shots behind Karlsson, Jimenez had three birdies and three bogeys on the front nine.
The Spaniard then fired an eagle on the 13th and a birdie on the 16th to catch up with Karlsson.
The pair were tied for the lead going into the final hole. The Swede's approach at the 18th was short and rolled down the bank into rough.
Karlsson fluffed two consecutive chips with his second effort running five feet past the hole.
Jimenez was well short with his 20-foot putt and then missed with his next shot to leave Karlsson needing to putt to force a playoff.
But the Swede missed leaving Jimenez to tap in to clinch his first title since the 2005 Welsh Open.
Jimenez said his victory proves he can still compete with the younger players.
"It's always a special feeling when you win a tournament. That proves to me that the ball is still going the right way and it's still there," Jimenez said.
"I feel sorry for Robert with the way it finished, he played so good all week. He had a double bogey at the last, and it's not the best way to finish."
