Karlsson takes record and lead

03/06/2006

Robert Karlsson has moved to 18 under par to set a three-round European Tour record at the Wales Open.

Karlsson finished on day three with a four under par, taking his three-day score to 189 shots from 54 holes.

The big Swede beat Tiger Woods' three round record to move six shots clear of Gary Orr and Paul Broadhurst.

Colin Montgomerie had a disappointing round of 69 to slip down the leaderboard and out of contention for the tournament win.

Karlsson said: "There's another 18 holes to go and if someone throws in a 61 behind me I will still have to play well to win."

"If you start thinking that it's yours to win then you are in big trouble. I'm trying to stay away from those sorts of thoughts all the time."

The tournament win would give the Swedish golfer the chance to make the Ryder Cup team. He said: "Even if I win I would need almost as much again to make it and there are a lot of big tournaments left."

Karlsson is desperate to make the team for this year's Ryder Cup after narrowly missing out on inclusion for the team in 1999.
