Kaymer leads BMW International at halfway stage

21/06/2008

German golfer Martin Kaymer has moved into pole position at the halfway stage of the BMW International Open in Munich.

The young star carded a nine-under-par 63 - including nine birdies to finish on 13-under overall.

He leads England's Benn Barham by five shots while French golfer Francois Delamontagne hit a 66 to remain in contention, some six shots behind Kaymer.

"I'm hitting the ball really long this week. I don't know why and it was a little scary to be honest," said the tournament leader.

"To play in your own country with all of the support is awesome."

And his form earned the play of playing partner and countrymen Bernhard Langer, who finished on two-under after a round of 72.

"It's great to see we have some youngsters who can hopefully take on the torch for golf in Germany in the future," the veteran remarked.

"I told him 'you're very aggressive, but you're smart at the same time like Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson'. He's got an old head on young shoulders."

He added: "Going by the last two days I don't think there any limits for him if he keeps that up."
