Kim takes Wachovia title

05/05/2008

Anthony Kim has become the youngest winner on the PGA tour in six years after claiming the Wachovia Championship in North Carolina.

Kim beat Ben Curtis by five strokes after carding a final round of three-under-par. The 22-year-old had held a four shot lead overnight but his nearest challengers struggled to make an impact on the final day.

The American birdied the opening hole for the fourth successive time to get his round off to the perfect start before claiming three more birdies on the front nine.

Further birdies at the 14th and 15th holes meant that dropped shots on the 13th, 16th and 17th made little difference to the outcome of the event, such was Kim's lead at that stage.

Finishing with a score of 16-under, Kim said he had enjoyed winning his first PGA tour title and wanted to repeat the feeling as many times as possible during his career.

He said: "I'm a little bit numb right now, but that walk up 18 was the best feeling in my entire life, and I'll never forget that feeling.

"I had chills going up and down my spine. I want to recreate that as many times as possible now, so I'm going to really work hard."

Curtis moved up from 13th heading into the final day to finish in second place on 11-under thanks to a final round of 65. He made seven birdies, an eagle and two bogeys to finish one shot ahead of Jason Bohn.

Bohn had been Kim's nearest challenger overnight but could only find one birdie and therefore never really posed a threat to the champion.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18579913-ADNFCR
