Leonard tops Allenby and Immelman in playoff
09/06/2008
Justin Leonard has won the Stanford St Jude Championship in Memphis after beating Robert Allenby and Trevor Immelman in the second hole of a playoff.
Leonard holed his second shot at the par-three 11th, while Immelman and Allenby could not equal the feat, after all three players had recorded pars at the first hole of the playoff, the 18th.
Both Allenby, Leonard and Immelman had trailed overnight leader Tim Clark going into the final round, but the South African capitulated to a six-over-par 76 on the final day to drop out of contention.
Leonard, who was tied for seventh going into Sunday's round, carded a two-under-par 68 to top the leaderboard on four under par overall.
Allenby enjoyed one of the best rounds of the day as he picked up five shots in his final round.
And Immelman, who was tied for second heading into the last day, managed a one-under-par round of 69.
European golfers Sergio Garcia and Padraig Harrington missed out on the playoff and ended in a tie with Boo Weekley and Alex Cejka for fourth overall.
