Love ends title drought
09/10/2006
Davis Love III has claimed his first PGA Tour title in three years by storming to a two-shot triumph at the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro in North Carolina.
The 42-year-old American shot a final-round six-under-par 66, helped by three successive birdies late on, to reach 16 under overall and pip Jason Bohn to the title.
It sealed his 19th career victory, and his second at this event, but also his first tour win since winning The International at Castle Pines in 2003.
Love admitted the welcome victory provided him with some consolation for missing this year's Ryder Cup at the K Club in Ireland, which came about after US team captain Tom Lehman overlooked him following his falling short in the points race.
"I told Tom Lehman that I was going to play good before the end of the year. I just couldn't promise him when it was going to be," Love said.
"He took that to heart, I guess, and I knew I was close. I knew when I got on the way that I would play well, and it took maybe some time off, some reflecting and getting my patience back."
He added: "People want me to win. They expect me to win, especially at a place like this. That's been my problem, expectations, whether they were mine or other people's. It's nice to put those aside and just play golf."
