McGinley continues on comeback trail
08/06/2006
Ireland's Paul McGinley has said that he is looking to continue along the comeback trail with a good performance at the Austrian Open.
McGinley made his return at last weekend's Wales Open at Celtic Manor after having surgery on his left knee and will be looking to continue getting back to shape in next week's US Open at Winged Foot in mind.
However, he knows that he is yet to recover 100 per cent and he wants to use the event at the Fontana golf club in Vienna to get himself up to speed for the second major of the year.
"My knee is not 100 per cent but, like a footballer needing games to get match fit, I need some tournaments under my belt," McGinley said.
"I could have played in America this week but felt with the way my knee is it was important to stay closer to home and play in a country that has been good to me in the past."
Another man looking to create some momentum ahead of Winged Foot is Scotland's Colin Montgomerie.
The eight-time European Order of Merit winner has suffered a difficult season, but put in a good performance at Celtic Manor to finish fourth, five shots behind winner Robert Karlsson.
I just think that the course, the clubhouse, the facilities are all set up for a wonderful tournament and I just look forward to competing as everything is here for a great event," Montgomerie said.
This is the first time in three years that the Austrian Open has been part of the European Tour.
