Memphis withdrawal casts doubt on Mickelson's US Open
06/06/2007
World number two Phil Mickelson has withdrawn from this weekend's Stanford St Jude Championship in Memphis in order to recover full fitness ahead of the US Open.
The major begins a week tomorrow but the American's participation remains in doubt after he picked up a wrist injury at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio last week.
However he has now been told by doctors that he is likely to be able to play at Oakmont from June 14th, provided he has a cortisone injection in his left wrist to restrict the swelling and improve his chances of recovery.
"The timing isn't the best because I really wanted to play at Memphis," Mickelson said.
"But the good news is there is no break or fracture. I have inflammation that can be relieved, and I'm looking forward to playing the Open at 100 per cent physically."
Mickelson pulled out of the Ohio competition after just 11 holes and was keen to get a doctors opinion on his wrist problem as soon as possible to have it diagnosed before the US Open.
He believes he injured the joint while practicing chipping out of the rough on the Oakmont course a fortnight ago.
