Mickelson edges into lead after third round in California
17/02/2008
World number two Phil Mickelson leads by one stroke after the third round of the Northern Trust Open in California.
The home favourite posted 70 to lie on 11-under-par at the Riviera Country Club, a shot clear of compatriot Jeff Quinney who fired 67.
Luke Donald is Europe's best challenger after carding 70 to lie on four-under along with Ireland's Padraig Harrington (71).
Mickelson, who began the day four strokes ahead, sunk three birdies and dropped two shots.
The American, bidding for his 33rd PGA Tour title, said he was pleased with how he navigated a difficult course.
"It was more difficult because the pin placements were a little tougher and the greens were a little firmer so it was harder to get it close," Mickelson said.
"Anything in the sixties was going to be a good round and I was close to doing that. I played very well and certainly Jeff Quinney played very well."
Quinney made a fine start with birdies on the first and fifth holes, and joined Mickelson at the top of the leaderboard with a hole-in-one at the par-three sixth.
The former US amateur champion birdied the tenth and bogeyed the 11th and 16th, before finishing his round by birdying the 18th with a 35-foot downhill put.
"I was just trying to snuggle it down there so I wouldn't have to worry about the second putt. Luckily it went at perfect speed, right in the centre," Quinney said.
"It's always nice to sleep on a birdie and getting one shot closer to Phil is great. But I've got to bring my best to the table tomorrow. He's definitely not going to hand it to me."
