Mickelson plans Scottish sortie
27/06/2007
World number two Phil Mickelson is confident he will be fit in time to play a warm-up tournament before next month's British Open at Carnoustie.
The big-hitting American has struggled with a wrist injury in recent weeks and has announced that he will rest up ahead of travelling to Europe for the Open Championship, which begins on July 19th.
He has dropped out of the upcoming PGA Tour event the Buick Open at Warwick Hills, Michigan but says he intends to play at the Scottish Open in Loch Lomond in the week before the Open.
"I like to compete in the week before a major if I can and going to the Scottish Open will also help me acclimatise," Mickelson said.
Although Loch Lomond is not a coastal course like Carnoustie, the American does not see this as a problem.
"I'm well aware it's an inland course rather than a links, but I'm sure I'll get the chance to play some links golf around the event," he added.
The Scottish Open begins on July 12th and Mickelson will be hoping for a better showing than his outing at Oakmont for the US major.
He missed the cut after a gruelling opening two rounds on the unforgiving Pennsylvania course.
