Mickelson wins title in playoff
11/11/2007
Phil Mickelson has won the HSBC Champions title following a playoff with Englishmen Ross Fisher and Lee Westwood.
The three men were tied for first place on ten-under-par after four rounds in Shanghai and two extra holes were required to separate them, with the American eventually prevailing.
Both Fisher and Mickelson had chances to win the tournament in the final round but made errors on the back nine to let Westwood catch them both.
Mickelson began the day with a two-shot lead but made six bogeys and one double-bogey along with just four birdies to finish on four-over for the day.
That handed Fisher his chance but he could not capitalise and made a triple-bogey seven at the last with the tournament at his mercy.
His mistake left both men level with clubhouse leader Westwood who had begun the day 12 shots behind Mickelson.
Westwood made six birdies on the back nine for a final-round score of 67 to put himself into the playoff.
The three golfers re-played the 18th hole but all missed birdie opportunities and so the hole was used again to try and separate them in what was becoming an increasingly dark setting.
Westwood hit a poor tee-shot to put himself out of contention, Mickelson chipped his second shot to within four-feet of the hole and when Fisher missed another birdie putt the American was left with a simple tap-in for victory.
Afterwards the world number two admitted: "It feels amazing. I don't how it happened, the whole day was a whirlwind."
