Montgomerie clinging to Open hope
17/07/2006
Colin Montgomerie believes he will challenge for The Open at Hoylake this week despite his poor showing in the warm-up event, the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond.
The 43-year-old Scot, still chasing that elusive first major victory, recorded his worst finish in six events yesterday, closing on six-under-par, seven shots behind winner Sweden's Johan Edfors.
Yet Montgomerie insists that result has not hampered his chances of performing well this week and that he is determined to challenge at Royal Liverpool.
"It's tiring winning. Sometimes it's not good to," he suggested after his final round.
"I'm okay. Tee to green I played well enough to win - I hit the ball super all week. I just putted very, very poorly again. Like last year, I'll find somewhere and work on it for a couple of hours."
Montgomerie finished second in last year's Open Championships, narrowly behind world number one Tiger Woods.
He recorded a similar runners-up position in last month's US Open when a heart-breaking double-bogey on the last allowed Phil Mickelson to triumph.
