Montgomerie leads US Open
15/06/2006
Colin Montgomerie has carded a brilliant 69 to take the early clubhouse lead at the US Open at Winged Foot.
The British favourite has come back from a torrid few years to challenge in one of the worlds biggest tournaments.
Montgomerie took control of the leaderboard with a one under par as many of the other players sufferd in the blustery conditions.
The Scottish star, who has never won a major, said: "I'm looking forward to the challenge this week as the US Open is my style of golf.
"Delighted, obviously. A 69 is a great score under any circumstances. Let's not shy away from that."
Phil Mickelson was one of the few big names able to keep up with Monty as he went round on level par.
Mickelson said: "It's a tough golf course but I thought this was as fair a US Open test as I've seen. I didn't hit many greens today but I was able to put myself in spots where I was able to get up and down."
American players Bo van Pelt and Jim Furyk and New Zealand's Michael Campbell are amongst the players jostling for position on day one of the Open.
