Montgomerie misses Open cut
21/07/2006
Three bogeys and one double-bogey in the last six holes at Royal Liverpool saw British hope Colin Montgomerie miss the cut at this year's Open Championship.
Montgomerie, runner-up in last year's Open at St Andrews in Scotland, will once again have to face the pain of not winning a major tournament after finishing four over par on a final score of 75.
The Scotsman's second round began poorly with a dropped shot at the first, sending his score to two-over-par from yesterday's mixed round of 73.
Although birdies on the fifth, eighth and tenth holes lifted his score above the projected cut, this latest setback meant Montgomerie was facing extreme pressure as afternoon turned to evening on the Wirral.
Other players missing the cut include Padraig Harrington, David Howell and Darren Clarke, who had a disastrous front nine, dropping five shots from the first seven holes.
Nick Faldo, who had attracted attention prior to the start of the tournament for his criticisms of Tiger Woods' swing, may want to take some advice from the Open leader, after Faldo's disastrous round yesterday was largely responsible for his four-over-par score.
