Monty admits putting worries

Scotland's Colin Montgomerie has admitted that he is worried about his putting ahead of this week's US Open.

The eight-time European Order of Merit winner has struggled all year with his form and has missed numerous cuts.

He has shown signs of a revival in recent weeks, finishing fourth at the Wales Open, but admits that his putting is leaving him anxious.

"My putting is not as good as it used to be and I've got to get it sorted out," Montgomerie said.

"I cannot get away with it this week and I must hole out."

The greens at the Winged Foot course have a reputation for taking no prisoners and this will surely add to Montgomerie's apprehension.

His putting woes were on display last weekend at the Austrian Open after he created a good position for himself before falling away during the final round.

However, one person who is looking forward to this weekend is Phil Mickelson.

The American is looking for his third major title in a row and he admits that he is happy with his game ahead of Winged Foot.

"My level of consistency is improving and I feel like I'm able to compete more regularly, week-in and week-out as well as day-in and day-out," Mickelson said.

"I've continued to work hard in all areas of my game and have also got physically stronger to support those type of swing changes that allow me to strike it better and enable me to hit shots that might not normally be hit."

Last year's US Open was won by New Zealand's Michael Campbell, who had to qualify for the tournament before going on to win it.
