Monty comeback seals last-16 spot in World Match Play
21/02/2008
Colin Montgomerie has won through to the third round of the World Match Play Championship after an amazing comeback against American Charles Howell.
The Scotsman secured a one-up victory at Dove Mountain despite falling behind after Howell birdied four consecutive holes from the tenth.
Montgomerie birdied three of the final four holes to grab victory and send himself through to the last 16.
"Charles birdied the 11th to go all square and my caddie said, 'right, Mr Montgomerie, it's Ryder Cup mode'. I was four under from then on, so he should say that more often in stroke-play events," said Montgomerie.
He added: "We're in the last 16 and delighted. I look forward to playing again tomorrow."
Montgomerie will be pleased to make it through to the third stage after being seeded 59th for the event. He will now play Stewart Cink in the next round after the American beat Padraig Harrington two-up.
Sergio Garcia was comprehensively dumped out of the competition by American Boo Weekley, who won three and one.
Englishman Paul Casey also progressed through to the last 16 with a two and one victory over Welshman Bradley Dredge.
Australian Aaron Baddeley had the easiest path through to the next round - progressing automatically after his opponent David Toms withdrew with a back injury.
