Monty desperate to taste success

30/10/2006

Colin Montgomerie has revealed he is desperate to finish the year with a trophy after a disappointing season.

The 43-year-old won €1,534,748 from 26 events on the European Tour, which ended on Sunday, but never finished at the top of the leaderboard.

Montgomerie, whose highlight this year has been guiding Europe to the Ryder Cup at the K Club in Ireland, said he is keen to salvage a title in 2006.

"It has been a poor season," he told the Champions Tournament website.

"I am desperate to win this year as I have never gone a calendar year without winning a title.

"I have six or seven events left and I intend to keep that run going with a victory."

Montgomerie is looking ahead to the new season which begins next week with the Champions Trophy in Shanghai.

The Scot, whose best result was joint runner-up at the US Open in June, will battle with Tiger Woods, Order of Merit winner Padraig Harrington, and American Jim Furyk at the Sheshan International Golf Club.

He insisted that he still has the determination of a youngster to win trophies.

"I've still got the ambition and the drive to go out and win golf events," he said.

"I have the same drive and ambition I had when I was 20.

"If that dwindles in any way I'll be in trouble. I've got to have that drive, as long as that remains I've got a few years left at this game yet."

The winner of the Champions Tournament, which begins on November 9th, will win a cheque for an eye-watering $5 million.
