Monty drops out of world top 50
16/10/2007
Scotland's Colin Montgomerie has dropped out of the top 50 of golf's world rankings after defeat in the first round of the World Match Play last week.
The 44-year-old, who was ranked 48th last week, fell three places to 51st after suffering a 3&2 loss to eventual champion Ernie Els at Wentworth golf club in Surrey.
The South African went on to beat Andreas Romero and Henrik Stenson before dispatching US Open champion Angel Cabrera in the 36-hole final to win his seventh match play title.
Els moved up to fourth in the world rankings after his victory at what is now his home course, overtaking American Steve Stricker who drops to fifth.
Rory Sabbatini dropped to tenth as KJ Choi and Sergio Garcia both moved up one place each to eighth and ninth respectively.
After reaching the finale at Wentworth Cabrera picked up four places in the rankings, entering the top 20 at 17th.
The former World Match Play champion Paul Casey remains at 22nd in the world after losing out to Cabrera in the semi-final over the weekend.
