Monty keeps chin up
20/06/2006
Colin Montgomerie believes he can still win a major despite throwing away his best ever chance this week.
The 43-year-old Scot only had to make par at the final hole at Winged Foot to take one of golf's ultimate accolades.
Instead the wobbling veteran blew his chance admitting that he had "messed up" in New York.
Montgomerie insists that he is as confident as ever and will travel to The Royal Liverpool next month feeling that he can still win his first major.
The big British player who has suffered away from the course in recent years with well publicised marital difficulties has battled back to form.
Montgomerie said: "Age is not as much a factor in golf as it is in other sports. Physically I am fitter than I have ever been and mentally tougher.
"I finished second in the Open last year, have finished second in the US edition and one day let's hope the door is open. It was open last week but I didn't walk through it."
He admitted that this year's lack of composure when the pressure was on was his worst ever. Some assertion since he has now finished second in five separate majors.
