Monty misses out on Masters after slipping down rankings
31/03/2008
Colin Montgomerie has failed to make next month's Masters after slipping to 75th in the latest world rankings.
The Scot needed a top-four finish at the Miami WGC-CA event this month to get back inside the top 50, but finished in joint-65th place and took this week off.
As a result, the 44-year-old will miss the Masters for only the second time in 17 years.
Montgomerie withdrew from the Ballentine's Championship in Seoul, in favour of playing in two events in the United States where more world ranking points were available.
On missing the event in Korea, he said: "I go to bed thinking about it [the Masters] and wake up thinking about it."
Montgomerie's only hope of playing in the Masters is receiving a special invitation by the tournament committee.
Ironically, the Briton has never performed well at Augusta - having finished in the top ten only once.
Meanwhile, the players who have been sent invitations for the Masters at Augusta on April 10th include Justin Leonard, Soren Hansen and Peter Lonard.
Nick Dougherty, Paul Casey, Luke Donald, Ian Poulter, Justin Rose and Lee Westwood will fly the flag for England, while former winners Ian Woosnam and Sandy Lyle will also compete.
But Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell and Wales' Bradley Dredge miss out after failing to make it into the world's top 50.
