Monty rolls back the years at K Club

06/07/2007

Colin Montgomerie trails leader Pelle Edberg by one stroke at the halfway stage of the European Open at the K Club in Ireland.

Ahead of next week's Open at Carnoustie, the Scot fired a four-under-par round of 64 to lie on seven under along with Sweden's Niclas Fasth.

Montgomerie, 44, rolled back the years by firing seven birdies to equal the best round of the day.

Edberg, ranked 460th in the world, also carded a round of 64 to lie on eight under to top the leaderboard in Dublin.

David Frost and Simon Khan are two strokes behind on six under while Padraig Harrington is on one under.

Montgomerie, who finished third in last week's French Open, said he was pleased with his recent resurgence.

"I've won the Irish Open three times and it would be nice if I could finally win the European Open," Montgomerie said.

"I never played this well when I last won in 2005, nothing like it. The last time I played this well must have been in 1999 when I won six times out here.

"There will be a time when it's my last one, but I do hope it hasn't happened and I'd like to emulate Des Smyth (the Tour's oldest winner at 49) and win in my late 40s."

"It's nice that golf enables me to do that. If I was in any other sport, in football or tennis, at 44 years old you're well gone."
