Monty slips up at the last, still top
23/06/2006
Colin Montgomerie finds himself at the top of the Johnny Walker Championship leaderboard, despite tripping up at the final hole for a third-straight round.
The Scot, celebrating his 43rd birthday, missed a three-foot birdie putt on the 18th green but still managed to card a five under-par round of 68 to lead the field by two shots after the second days play.
It was the third time in a row Mongomerie had erred at the final hole, having double-bogeyed the last at the US Open on Sunday to throw away a chance at the title and spoiled his otherwise impressive first round at Gleneagles yesterday.
"I just don't know what's going on here," Montgomerie said. "That's my third round in a row and that's not good at all."
"I've got to get it right for 18 holes. It tarnished the US Open, it tarnished yesterday and it's tarnished today," he added.
"If I cant two-putt from 20 feet then theres something wrong there was nothing difficult about it at all."
Despite this worrying run of poor finishing, Monty still finds himself leading the field as he tries to put last weeks heart-breaking failure at Winged Foot behind him.
Fellow Briton Paul Casey is currently second at eight-under while Andrew Marshall sits joint-third a further shot back, along with the Australian Marcus Fraser, Soren Hansen of Denmark, and Swedens Robert Karlsson.
