Monty wants Ryder Cup farewell on home soil
15/11/2006
Colin Montgomerie would like to play one last Ryder Cup on home soil before putting himself forward as captain.
The Scot said he wanted to be competing as a player in 2008 when the European team defends the trophy in the US and again in 2010 at Celtic Manor.
A final swansong on home turf would be a fitting farewell for Montgomerie, who inspired the team to their third consecutive victory in September.
While he has made no secret of his desire to captain the European team in the future, the world number 18 said, for now, he wanted to play.
"Hopefully I will be helping the European cause in other ways," he said. "I hope I can compete in 2010 as opposed to being captain."
If he manages to qualify for the next two tournaments, he would have been playing Ryder Cup golf for almost two decades.
Nick Faldo, who won six majors and played in 11 Ryder Cups, will captain the European team in 2008.
Ian Woosnam, who masterminded this year's victory at the K Club in Ireland, has said he would be willing to take on the job again and could pick up the reins in four years' time.
