Olazabal to miss Open
17/07/2007
Spanish veteran Jose Maria Olazabal has been forced out of the Open after admitting defeat in his battle to recover from a knee injury in time for the Carnoustie tee-off on Thursday.
The two-time Masters winner had already excused himself from the French and Scottish Opens in a bid to save himself for the major but, despite undergoing intensive rehabilitation work over the weekend, he has pulled out.
The withdrawal means the Ryder Cup stalwart has not played since finishing 45th in the US Open four weeks ago.
American Tom Pernice is the beneficiary of Olazabal's misfortune and will take his place in the draw.
Pernice was originally second reserve, but countryman Lucas Glover who occupied the first slot had already been called in to replace injured Japanese qualifier Shingo Katayama.
Indian Jyoti Randhawa is now at the top of the back-up list should anyone else drop out of the tournament.
