Orr soars as Seve struggles
30/06/2006
Scotsman Gary Orr has leapfrogged to the top of the leaderboard in the French Open at Le Golf National in Paris after a stunning second round 64.
The 39-year-old was one of the day's early starters and took full advantage of the morning conditions, hitting seven birdies in a faultless round.
Added to yesterday's one-under-par 70, Orr finds himself with a one-shot lead in the clubhouse, just ahead of Welshman Bradley Dredge and Spain's Jose Manuel Lara.
Overnight leader John Bickerton, who shot a 63 yesterday, is among the day's late starters as is former US Open champion Michael Campbell.
One man not enjoying his time on Le Golf National today, however, was Spanish legend Seve Ballesteros.
The 49-year-old, playing in his first tournament since October, shot a second successive ten-over-par 81 in a round which comprised three double bogeys, four bogeys and not a single birdie.
Afterwards, he admitted: "It was difficult to concentrate on the golf course, that is why I had high numbers. It is the type of course if you lose your concentration it bites you quickly.
"I had some good shots out there but I have had a lack of competition. But it's been a nice week."
Thankfully, when questioned if he will still play in the Open at Hoylake next month, he replied: "Sure, why not? Nothing has changed."
