Pampling in front in Ohio

03/06/2007

Australian Rod Pampling has taken the lead at the Memorial Invitational in Ohio following a third round 68 that puts him two shots in front of Adam Scott and Sean O'Hair.

Pampling made a quiet start to his round making a bogey at the 6th but immediately getting the shot back at the next hole.

It was on the back nine that his round caught fire, the 37-year-old made four birdies – including a crucial one at the last - to head the field going into the final day on 15-under-par.

Pampling had been level with playing partner Scott as they took on the 18th, but while he made a birdie compatriot Scott could only bogey the hole having found a bad lie with his tee shot.

"Finishing with four birdies on the back nine really gave me a lot of confidence for tomorrow," said Pampling.

"If I can get off to a nice start tomorrow, it puts more pressure on those guys, because they have to make birdies, whereas if there's a tough pin, I don't have to be as aggressive."

Scott had an inconsistent round that saw him finish evens the day after he shot a round of ten-under to claim the lead.

O'Hair bounced back from two early bogies to card a three-under round that keeps him in contention. He grabbed an eagle at the par-five seventh and a further three birdies on the back nine to maintain his position just behind the leader.

Americans Will MacKenzie and Stewart Cink both shot a 65 on day three to move into contention at 11-under along with Australian Aaron Baddeley.
