Parnevik continues charge in Texas
06/10/2007
Jesper Parnevik maintained his lead in the Texas Open in San Antonio with a second round of five-under, leaving him on 14-under for the tournament.
Parnevik heads a cluster of Swedes at the top of the leaderboard. The 42-year-old is four shots ahead of compatriot Mathias Gronberg, while Richard Johnson and Fredrik Jacobson are tied for third place on nine-under.
Despite being unable to re-create yesterday's round of nine-under, Parnevik still scored well claiming six birdies and one bogey.
Shigeki Maruyama threatened the Swede's lead at one stage after making five birdies in the first seven holes. However Parnevik held his nerve and performed steadily on the back nine while Maruyama made a double-bogey at the 12th which saw him drop to seven-under.
Parnevik was satisfied with his lead and was optimistic about carrying his early form into the rest of the weekend.
He said: "I, of course, think the course has played very easy. It's always nice when you have a few to spare than the other way around. I would like to be in the lead by as many as possible."
Gronberg shot his second consecutive round of 65 to claim second place overnight. The 37-year-old finished the round strongly making an eagle at the par-five 14th and followed that with birdies at the 16th and 18th holes.
Justin Leonard is the leading American, six shots behind on eight-under. He carded a 67 to add to his first round 65 as he attempts to capture the title he won in 2000 and 2001.
