Pavin smashes nine-hole record
28/07/2006
Corey Pavin produced the purplest patch in golf history by completing the outward nine of a PGA Tour event in just 26 shots.
The American veteran birdied eight of the opening nine holes during his brilliant first round at the US Bank Championship in Milwaukee to rewrite the PGA history books.
His prolific form slowed on the way in but his nine-under-par score of 61 was still good enough to set a new course record at the Brown Deer golf club.
The former US Open champion also took the clubhouse lead, going ahead by three shots from Indian Arjun Atwal, although weather forced an early end to the day's play with many players still to complete their rounds.
Speaking after his stunning round, Pavin, 46, admitted: "I hit good shots close and converted the putts. It was a magical nine and very exciting for me."
With the majority of European players playing on home soil this week, Germany's Alex Cejka is the leading player from the continent. He is currently in tied 13th place after shooting a three under 67.
