Peerless Woods wins fourth straight Buick Invitational title
28/01/2008
World number one Tiger Woods began the 2008 season in familiar fashion with victory at the Buick Invitational in California.
The imperious American, who secured a comfortable victory by eight shots at Torrey Pines in California, had won the event for the previous three consecutive years.
And he made it four in style on Sunday as he maintained his eight-shot advantage over the field, despite carding his worst round of the week - a one-under-par 71.
Rounds of 67, 65 and 66 in the opening three rounds established a clear lead for Woods going into the final day.
So despite the efforts of Japan's Ryuji Imada and South African Rory Sabbatini, who both finished with commendable five-under-par rounds of 67, Woods was able to cost home.
The world number one's nearest challenger overnight, fellow American Stewart Cink, endured a frustrating day with a one-over-par 73 as he fell into a tie for third with Sabbatini.
The Buick Invitational title means Woods has now won 62 PGA Tour events in his career - matching legendary golfer Arnold Palmer, whose mark of 18 Major title wins Woods is still chasing.
