Perry bounces back from bad start to share Memorial lead

31/05/2008

Kenny Perry bounced back from a poor start to his second round to earn a share of the lead with Matthew Goggin at the Memorial tournament in Ohio.

Goggin and Perry lead the tournament on seven-under-par, with Jerry Kelly one shot adrift and England's Luke Donald in fourth place on five-under.

Perry began with three bogeys in his first five holes but an eagle at the 15th, his sixth hole, helped erase much of that bad work.

The American had been affected by the swirling winds which ravaged the course on Friday but the eagle changed his fortunes.

On the front nine Perry made three birdies and one bogey to enable him to tie with Goggin at the halfway stage of the tournament.

All of the players found it hard to score during the second round because of the weather conditions and very few managed to go under-par.

By contrast to Perry's round Goggin started with four birdies in five holes but from there on he found things much tougher.

Bogeys at the eighth and ninth undid most of his good work, while his three birdies on the back nine were overshadowed by three bogeys and one double-bogey.

Afterwards Goggin admitted the weather had played a big part during his round. He said: "I didn't know what was going on, but it just got windier and windier and tougher and tougher."

Donald managed to survive the day with few scares and seemed to cope with the conditions well. He notched two birdies and one bogey to stay in contention with the leaders.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18617995-ADNFCR
