Pettersson leads in Memorial tournament
04/06/2006
Sweden's Carl Pettersson has moved two shots ahead of the field after completing his third round at the Memorial tournament.
Pettersson had three holes to complete after a rain had forced him to abandon his third round at the Muirfield Village Golf Club, Ohio.
He completed a bogey, birdie, par finish to complete the round as the clubhouse leader on 11 under par, after a third round of 69.
The Swede's lead was extended to two shots, however, after his two nearest rivals both managed to drop a shot during the final hole.
US pros Woody Austin and Zach Johnson both recorded bogeys on the 18th to fall back. Austin will come out for his final round on nine under after a good round of 67, with Johnson a shot further back on eight under and a third round of 70.
World number two Phil Mickelson also had trouble at the last, recording a bogey on the only hole remaining for his third round to finish a with a score of 70. He is now four shots behind the leader, Pettersson.
If Pettersson can hold on to win at the Memorial tournament it will be his second of his career on the US PGA tour after his victory at the Chrysler championship last year.
A victory would mean that Pettersson would not have to qualify for the US Open. The next event the Swede is due to play is a qualifier for the major tournament.
