Pettersson wraps up Memorial win
05/06/2006
Carl Pettersson has thrown himself into contention to make Europe's Ryder Cup team by storming to a superb two-shot victory in the US PGA Memorial tournament in Ohio.
The 28-year-old Swede carded a final round 71 to finish on 12-under-par overall, two shots clear of American duo Brett Wetterich and Zach Johnson.
His triumph lands him a winning cheque for $1 million, assures him a place in the US Open at Winged Foot and means he is now well in line to be selected by Ian Woosnam to take on the US at the K Club, County Kildare, in September.
"It is a dream come true just to play in this tournament - to win it is just phenomenal," he said after completing his round.
"Last year when I won for the first time I finally realised you don't have to play perfect golf to win. You can hit some bad shots but you have to back them up with good shots. That's all I kept thinking about."
He added: "I didn't feel I was out of my element. Obviously you're nervous, but I felt good about myself. My swing was there so I felt confident. When you know your game is there, it calms you down."
Pettersson's win was made all the more remarkable by the fact that eight of the world's top ten were in attendance at the event.
However, Masters champion Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott were the only members of the elite top ten who ever looked like challenging but they both fell short to finish on nine under in shared fourth.
Of the English contingent, Justin Rose was in good touch, finishing in tied 14th on four under, Paul Casey closed one shot further back and Ian Poulter recovered from his disastrous third round 79 by carding a 67 to end in 34th.
David Howell, who has stormed to tenth in the world, shot a final round 71 but this was effectively in vain following his catastrophic third round 83.
